Graduating as an engineer from University of Nevada in 1986, Prof. Dr. Shahimi embarked on his engineering career with placement at Advance Micro Devices and Northern Telecom of Penang that provided him tremendous opportunity to gain hands on knowledge and experience in maintenance engineering and industrial processes engineering.
After obtaining his MBA from Ohio University at Athens, USA in 1993, he joined Malaysian Fisheries Department as Marine Engineer; this placement ended in 1996 with his career change move to academia at University Utara Malaysia in 1997. With his industrial knowledge and experience and his passion for teaching and research, he excelled in academia where he has continued ever since, moving from being lecturer to Associate Professor and now Dean of School of Technology Management and Logistics – taking only a two year break (2004-2005) to complete his DBA at University of South Australia at Adelaide, Australia.
He has proven skills in teaching and in main current research areas including; Innovation Management, Project Quality Management, and Supply Chain & Technology Management. As Dean, he ensures that academic staff at his school goes beyond their call of duty in terms of helping students and holding office hours; they not only know their material, but they also know how to teach it well. Good Teaching is as much about passion as it is about reason. It’s about not only motivating students to learn, but teaching them how to learn; about substance and training students as consumers of knowledge. It is about listening, questioning, being responsive, and remembering that each student and class is different. It is about caring, nurturing, and developing minds and talents supported by strong and visionary leadership, and very tangible instructional support resources, personnel, and funds.
